Sumatran Orangutan Society

We were asked to design a fundraising guide for the Sumatran Orangutan Society, an organisation that works to protect critically endangered Sumatran Orangutans.

Whilst thinking of a suitable image to illustrate the message that every penny counts, we noticed the correlation between the colour of Orangutans and one penny pieces.

This led to the idea of creating a dot screen of a young Orangutan (who we are calling Penny!) using nothing but pennies. Rather than create this digitally, we decided it would be fun to actually make it at A0 size and photograph it for the brochure.

So off we went to the bank to ask for £20 worth of pennies, which gave us 2,000 pennies to sort out! We took advantage of the wide tonal variations found in penny coins from the new, bright and shiny ones through to the old and oxidised ones. We arranged them into seven shades which gave us our tones to create the image.

Having seen how great this looked in the flesh, it dawned on us that we could frame it and give it to SOS to auction at one of their charity fundraising evenings. This is exactly what happened and it raised £3,000 for the charity, so worth every penny!

If you would like to donate to SOS, please do so here.
